A two-panel screen painting on gilt of a phoenix hovering over a mountain stream and a peony bush in full bloom in the right foreground. Very detailed brushwork in the artist's handling of the feathers of the wings and tailfeathers of the phoenix, and the rivulets in the water, and the petals and leaves of the peonies. Also very delicate shading throughout the painting lends a three-dimensional effect. The screen is in very good, original condition and dates from the end of the Edo Period, circa 1845-1860.
