A pair of two-panel folding screen paintings on gilt. The four panels consist of 36 folding fans -- each with a very delicate, detailed, and different hand-painted scene on the front, affixed to the gilt surface of the two screens, nine per panel. The majority of the paintings are miniature pictures of nature, along with a few landscapes and mythological scenes. The screens are in very good, original condition except for replacing the external frames, and adding decorative hardware. The screens date from the end of the Edo Period, circa 1845-1860.
