Kaidan #2

A small, narrow, and therefore very rare "Kaidan-dansu" or staircase chest, from the Shiga area of south central Japan, not far from Kyoto. The unusual proportions, i.e. a short base but fairly standard height, suggest the piece was most likely a "Nagaya" or laong and narrow building (from front to back), owned probably by a prosperous merchant. The frame is made of cedar, but the entire front is made of keyaki wood -- a rariety for this region. In good, original condition, except for replacement of 3 steps and the door hinges. Late Edo.

Unless a client is in a great hurry and doesn't care about the high cost of shipping a fairly large piece such as this by air freight, our recommendation is always sea freight.
