Ranma (transom panel)

One of a pair of carved hawks, each perched on a limb of a paulownia tree. This striking and bold type of design with the paulownia leaves protruding out beyond the inner frame is quite unusual and requires a very thick board to enable the carver to execute this. Solid keyaki wood, Hokuriku Region, Late Edo Period.
